More About Lava Bombs

Due to popular demand (clamor, really) for more information about lava bombs, I feel I should explain further. All I ask is that you stop sending me emails asking about lava bombs. Enough is enough. That means you, Will Reppun.

A lava bomb begins as a blob of magma that is ejected from a caldera or fire fountain. The liquid blob quickly cools when it comes into contact with the air, turning to a heavy, black rock that can fly for several kilometers before descending as a lava bomb.

The process works roughly like this:

Notice how the ejected scoria are cooled by contact with the air. This is a sub-Plinyan eruption with a potential for pyroclastic flows.

Now we will never know what happened to the mermaids. Or will we? No, probably not.

When you freeze the moment, it has a strange kind of beauty, the mysteriousness of objects arrested in their fall. It seems that the suspension of gravity is one of the ways we can access Grace.

To completely understand the above diagrams (my drawings of the volcano, not my asterisk-painting, which is beyond the limits of language in its depiction of the world), it should be noted that I have also decided to start a band called The Lava Bombs. We will only play one song, the Song of the Volcano. There are three voices that intertwine in the Song of the Volcano: the Gurgler, the Exploder, and the Descent of The Lava Bombs. After we finish the song, ideally a nearby volcano will erupt and obliterate the sparsely attended open-mic venue where we performed.
